A Vote of Confidence from the NZ GovernmentThe New Zealand Government has More Ups than Downs
The New Zealand Government has taken its first positive steps in moving forward with large projects to get the country up and running again
Whilst America goes through a major battle to get their Health Reform policy through the Senate, New Zealand is, for a change, forging ahead with some new projects and to add insult to injury, some old sentiment. Looking ForwardOver the past 10 years some cities in New Zealand have started to resemble Japan with their vast apartment blocks standing tall on the city landscape. Auckland is the largest city in New Zealand and has grown fast and furiously. At the end of 2008 everything started to grind to a halt, although building consents for apartments were still being put to the council, apartment blocks were being left with only half of the apartments sold and apartment prices were way overpriced. As the Recession hit New Zealand, apartment and house prices took a nose dive, leaving many property investors with a little valued asset. Now, house prices have just started to climb but apartment prices are still stagnant. Although New Zealand’s economy has still not recovered, but apparently it is out of recession, the Government have decided to show some initiative and get some much talked about projects off the ground. The Prime Minister this week officially launched the first National cycle trail in the Waikato, along the Waikato River, highlighting the well known locations New Zealand’s world winning rowers practice from. This is a major step in the right direction as it means spending money, hopefully getting the economy moving. There are another four trails planned over the next 2 years, all in scenic parts of the country – ideal spots for tourists to see the beautiful country. Also, Construction on New Zealand’s first underground road tunnel was officially started this week. The tunnel is 440m long but will only carry cars in a Northward direction, linking the city to the North Shore. The Government has another six projects, mainly motorway connections and busways in the pipeline as well. These will hopefully boost New Zealand’s economy and job prospects. Looking BackOnce again has been a scrappy week in New Zealand Politics. This week New Zealanders heard a lot about MP’s going away on official overseas trips and taking their wives/partners with them at the taxpayers’ expense. The other MP missed a meeting in Paris to go sightseeing (at the taxpayers’ expense). This MP is a member of the Maori Party and when questioned by his peers (members of his own party)replying with very offensive racist remarks in an email to another party member (Source: New Zealand Herald, TV3 News, http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=10608672). This week in politics has given hope for the economy and much for the public and Politicians to debate. Source – TV3 News
